A blue eye-catcher: Osram expands its Cool Blue Intense range

Halogen and xenon lamps are still attractive alternatives to LEDs
Cool Blue Intense Limited Edition available from September 2014

To coincide with Automechanika 2014, Osram is expanding its portfolio of automotive lamps offering extremely high color temperatures and performance. The "Cool Blue Intense" lamps with their bluish bright white light give cars a special appearance and provide greater contrast on the road. "Halogen and xenon lamps will continue to be widely used technologies in the automotive sector in the years to come", said Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of the Specialty Lighting Business Unit at Osram. "For us as the world market leader in this segment it is therefore important to keep offering customers exciting innovations as retrofits and upgrades."

The new product on show will be the H8 halogen version, for example for the BMW 3 Series Coupé. From September there will be Limited Edition H4 and H7 lamps with improved luminous efficacy and a special design. These exclusive lamps are equipped with a silver reflector cap which is completely new in the Osram portfolio. With a special progressive coating, that provides the xenon look, they produce up to 30 percent more light on the road compared with standard halogen lamps.

The Cool Blue Intense based on halogen has a color temperature of up to 4200 kelvin, making it currently the automotive lamp with the bluest color temperature approved for road use by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). The special color and up to 20 percent more light on the road than conventional halogen lamps improve contrast perception. Drivers can therefore more easily see other road users, road markings and obstacles.

Brightly lit roads with the Xenarc Cool Blue Intense

Xenon lamps are based on the principle of high-intensity discharge. The Xenarc Cool Blue Intense lamps from Osram offer maximum light output at up to 5500 kelvin. This high color temperature gives the light a balanced blue tone and illuminates the road as if in natural daylight. The characteristic color is achieved by a special gas mixture and not by a colored outer bulb. In this way the light output can be increased by around 20 percent. A blue ceramic tube is used to distinguish it from Xenarc Original lamps. The Xenarc Cool Blue Intense is available now in D3S and D4S versions in addition to the D1S and D2S versions.

Bluish high-contrast light for individual design

Cool Blue Intense lamps from Osram, together with the Night Breaker Unlimited series, constitute the high-end portfolio from Osram in the halogen and xenon ranges. While Night Breaker Unlimited lamps above all provide a large amount of light on the road, the focus with the Cool Blue Intense lamps is on a particularly blue light, in other words light with a high color temperature.
