Introducing the New High-Efficiency Blue Laser Diode with 455 nm Wavelength

Premstaetten (Austria) and Munich (Germany), (March 05, 2025) – ams OSRAM (SIX: AMS), a global leader in intelligent sensors and emitters, announces the launch of its new high-power blue laser diode, the PLPT9 450LC_E. This innovative product stands out with its impressive wall-plug efficiency of 43 percent and for the first time a wavelength of 455 nanometers (nm). The blue laser diode in a TO90 package is another part of the continuously growing portfolio. It features a compact and robust design, making it ideal for applications requiring a robust package and high optical power.

“The new blue laser diode represents a significant advancement in blue laser technology, providing our customers with a powerful and efficient solution for their high-demand applications," said Michael Mayr, Product Manager at ams OSRAM. "With its high optical power, high efficiency and compact design, this 455 nm laser diode significantly improves the way industries approach laser-based applications.”

The PLPT9 450LC_E is engineered to deliver an impressive optical power of 5.5 watts at a wavelength of 455 nm. The new laser offers a significantly improved wall-plug efficiency of typically 43 percent. This high level of output power and efficiency makes it suitable for applications that demand significant optical performance, ensuring that it meets the requirements of both industrial and medical markets. The wavelength binning in 2nm-steps enables customer selection of suitable devices for applications with high requirements regarding wavelength accuracy. The product is available in a robust TO90 Metal Can™ package featuring low thermal resistance.

Versatile Conversion Capabilities
Wavelength conversion is a critical aspect of blue laser technology, significantly enhancing its versatility and application range. By using a phosphor conversion process, blue laser diodes can generate high-power white light, which is suitable for applications requiring high-quality illumination like spotlights with a narrow beam angle. In addition to white light, blue laser light can be converted to other colors such as red, green, and orange. This is achieved through similar phosphor conversion processes, where different phosphor materials are used to emit various colors when excited by blue laser light. This flexibility allows for precise and efficient color generation, catering to the specific needs of different industries. Applications such as stage lighting and specialty lighting can benefit from the ability to produce a broad spectrum of colors, enhancing functionality and performance. For instance, in microscopy, the ability to generate specific colors together with a narrow beam angle can improve contrast and detail in imaging.

Projection and other applications
The PLPT9 450LC_E excels in laser projection, providing bright and clear images with high optical power. Its high efficiency and robust performance ensure that it can meet the diverse needs of both industrial users, making it a highly adaptable and valuable component in various technological solutions. Whether for large-scale projections or intricate laser displays, this blue laser diode delivers exceptional results, enhancing visual experiences across multiple platforms.
In addition to projection, blue lasers are also highly effective in material treatment applications like engraving or welding. Their precision and reliability make them ideal for tasks that require detailed and accurate marking.
