Filmfest München: The ARRI/OSRAM Award goes to…

Announcing the best foreign film for the third time

For the 33rd time, Munich will host Filmfest. Once again, Osram and Arri will present the prize for the best foreign film. An independent jury of three will select from a field of 12 nominees and award the winner 50,000 Euros. The jury will announce this year’s recipients on Saturday, July 4, in the Carl Orff auditorium in Munich's Gasteig building. With decades of work in the film and cinema sector, both Osram and Arri have been honoured with several Oscars® for their achievements – Osram for lighting and projection and Arri for professional camera and lighting equipment.

Filmfest München is a veritable highlight for all cinema-goers. It not only provides renowned directors and actors an ideal platform for presenting international, European, and German premieres in the movie, documentary film, and TV sectors, it is also an opportunity for newcomers to present their work. Award-winning movies in previous years included “Leviathan” in 2014, directed by Andrei Swjaginzew, who received Oscar® nominations for “Best Foreign-Language Film” in 2013 and 2015.

As an expert for lighting and projection systems, Osram has a long history in the movie industry and has the honour of being the award partner for the Filmfest’s best foreign film. “Light in the movie and TV business is a highly decisive factor, both in front of the camera and in cinema auditoriums,” explained Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO Specialty Lighting at Osram. “Cinema and TV movies suffer in terms of atmosphere and attraction without well-illuminated sets and studios and good image projection onto screens. With the ARRI/OSRAM award, we aim to further deepen our close contacts with creative people in the film industry.”

For more than 60 years, Osram has illuminated the drama of the silver screen. In 1984, the company’s xenon lamp even won an Oscar® in the “Lighting” category. Osram’s latest xenon lamp improves upon this classic, featuring significant performance enhancements in terms of lifespan, luminous intensity, and operating hours.

Lamps sourced from Munich-based Osram are highly popular for cinema and movie lighting across the globe, illuminating an estimated 50 percent of movie sets. Approximately 33 percent of cinemas also use Osram’s xenon lamps with XBO technology.
