  • In-house production provides immunity against supply chain disruption

The OSLON® Black infrared LED has established itself as the industry-standard light source for camera-based Near Infrared (NIR) in-cabin automotive sensing applications. Its popularity is the result of its reliable operation, its range of field of illumination (FoI) options in a single package footprint, and its ability to handle high pulse currents.

AEC-Q102 qualified and available in 850 nm and 940 nm wavelength options, the OSLON Black LED is already in use in around one in 10 of the new vehicles on the market today. In total, 36 car makers globally use OSLON Black LEDs. In these vehicles, the LED provides the high-power IR illumination needed for NIR camera-based in-cabin sensing functions such as driver monitoring, interior monitoring, and gesture sensing.
Now the appeal of the OSLON Black has been strengthened even further with the launch of a generation of devices featuring a new IR:6 chip.

The package footprint, at 3.75 mm x 3.75 mm, remains the same as in the existing OSLON Black products, as do the lens options: 50°, 60°, 80° and 150° circular, and a rectangular field of illumination of either 155° x 130° or 135° x 110°.

But the new chip increases the OSLON Black’s radiant flux by 15%. At the same time, the typical thermal resistance has improved from 5.5 K/W to 3.9 K/W, enabling the development of highly efficient systems that generate less heat, as well as giving market-leading pulse current derating.

The higher flux and pulse current capability are a valuable combination of features for in-cabin sensing designs. Together, these improvements mean that in-cabin sensing system manufacturers can upgrade the OSLON Black LED in existing designs and instantly gain a substantial increase in performance. This gives an improved signal-to-noise ratio in in-cabin sensing applications, for instance enabling the system to maintain increased immunity to interference from sunlight and to improve the functionality of driver and cabin monitoring systems.

The new generation of OSLON Black LEDs is produced in a fully ams OSRAM-owned supply chain: chip fabrication takes place in Germany, and the devices are packaged in Malaysia. The products are available for sampling now. Contact ams OSRAM to find out more or to request samples
