Honor Magic 8 Series Features ams OSRAM’s Next-Generation HDR Flicker Detection Sensor, Delivering a Professional Ambient-Light Detection Experience
ams OSRAM (SIX: AMS), a global leader in lighting and sensing innovation, announced that its next-generation HDR flicker detection sensor has been integrated into the newly released Honor Magic 8 flagship series. Featuring ultra-high sensitivity, precision, and dynamic range, the sensor provides critical technical support for the Magic 8 Series’ professional-grade ambient-light detection and flicker-health monitoring, jointly advancing eye-comfort inspection for displays and lighting devices to unprecedented levels.
At the Magic 8 Series launch event, Honor introduced the industry’s first professional ambient-light flicker detection function. Powered by ams OSRAM’s next-generation HDR flicker detection sensor, the system supports an ultra-high sampling rate of up to 20,000 Hz, enabling real-time detection of lighting and display flicker frequency, flicker depth, and related characteristics. By visualizing flicker status, it provides users with personalized eye-comfort protection.
As consumer awareness of display eye-safety and flicker from everyday lighting continues to rise, flicker-related visual fatigue—often imperceptible to the naked eye—has become a growing concern. To address this pain point, the Magic 8 Series introduces an innovative ambient-light detection capability. By converting “invisible” flicker risks into “visible” health alerts through advanced flicker-sensing technology, the solution makes eye protection more intuitive and manageable.
ams OSRAM’s new HDR flicker detection sensor—built on its latest ADC IP architecture—integrates ambient-light and flicker-detection functions within a compact package that preserves space in end devices while ensuring high performance. The sensor includes two optical-filter channels, C-channel and W-channel, and supports sampling rates up to 35 kHz, with a dynamic range of up to 14 bits at 10 kHz sampling rate. This enables significantly enhanced detection of flicker sources in both low-light and strong sunlight environments.
With this advanced configuration, the sensor enables the Honor Magic 8 Series to deliver measurement performance comparable to professional instruments—effectively becoming a “pocket-sized flicker detector” for users.
As an innovation leader in the mobile manufacturing, Honor continues to drive advancement and leadership in flicker-detection technologies. The partnership with ams OSRAM serves as a model for exploring forward-looking application scenarios based on user needs. Leveraging its extensive expertise in sensing, ams OSRAM developed a customized solution tailored to the Magic 8 Series use cases, collaboratively unlocking new possibilities for ambient-light detection on mobile devices.
Additionally, the Honor Magic 8 Series integrates ams OSRAM’s latest RGB color sensor. Working in tandem with the ultra-high-sensitivity flicker detection sensor, it enhances optical perception capabilities in mobile devices, helping the series achieve differentiated competitiveness. This collaboration also lays a solid foundation for deeper cooperation on next-generation flagship models and will continue to drive sensing-technology innovation across smart devices.
