ams OSRAM unveils its new IVT sensor AS8512 for industrial battery applications e.g. in solar systems and wind power plants

ams OSRAM has launched its AS8512 IVT sensor, a highly accurate component for current, voltage and temperature measurement for industrial applications, adding to its portfolio of high-precision sensors for battery management systems. Read more in the following product update:

New industrial-grade data acquisition front-end IC for synchronous current, voltage and temperature measurements in battery power storage systems

Premstätten, Austria and Munich, Germany (29 February 2024) – ams OSRAM, a leading global provider of intelligent sensors and emitters, is unveiling its new AS8512 IVT sensor and expanding its family of current sensors with a high-precision component for battery management systems, which are used in solar systems and wind power plants, for example.

The AS8512 IVT sensor enables virtually offset-free, low-noise, 2-channel differential current and voltage measurement in battery management systems. In combination with a shunt resistor connected in series with the battery rail, it can accurately measure a wide range of currents from mA to kA. The second measuring channel can be used either to measure the battery voltage synchronously with the current or to measure the analog output of an internal or external temperature sensor. The measurements are delivered via a 4-pin serial SPI interface.

Its high-precision data acquisition, low-noise measurement with no zero offset, and synchronous measurement of current, voltage, and temperature make the AS8512 a cost-effective sensor for long-term applications for monitoring industrial battery energy storage systems (BESS), in which energy is stored for use at a later date. The sensor enables precise measurement of the current and voltage and thus an exact calculation of the battery test capacity (SoC - State of Charge). “In this way, customers can design their battery management systems efficiently and benefit from an optimized solution in the field of industrial battery applications thanks to the use of our sensor,” explains Andreas Schlapka, Senior Director Product Line Position & Temperature Sensors at ams OSRAM.
BESS are rechargeable batteries that can store energy from various sources and deliver power when needed. These systems, consisting of one or more batteries, can be used for grid balancing, for providing backup power and for improving grid stability. Our energy-intensive society and the industry’s long-term conversion to alternative and sustainable energy sources make the relevant solutions – and therefore the sensor technologies they need – increasingly attractive and valuable.

About IVT sensors
Modern battery management systems, as used in everything from electric vehicles to industrial energy storage systems, require very accurate current and voltage measurements. With its offset-free sensor solutions based on shunt resistors, ams OSRAM provides the right technology for the various application scenarios: IVT sensor AS8510 for battery management in the automotive sector and the associated interface solution, the AS8525. The AS8512, another IVT sensor, is ideally suited for industrial battery systems.
